How to trust God and
His Promises– ASK!!
Three Seasons Community Church–
1-28-07
Faith is believing in something that hasn't
happened yet. But I know it will happen because it already has happened.
It just hasn't happened yet to me. But I don't need to draw from
personal experience, God's word is enough. When I ask him about
something I read in the Bible he'll share with me from his own personal
experience and memories. (His own mind and heart) It's so awesome I
don't have words to express what it's like! That's where my mustard seed
comes from.
John 14:12-14 [CEV] I tell you for certain that
if you have faith in me, you will do the same things that I am doing.
You will do even greater things, now that I am going back to the Father.
[13] Ask me, and I will do whatever you ask. This way the
Son will bring honor to the Father. [14] I will do whatever you
ask me to do.
Ask = ask, beg, call for, crave, desire,
require.
John 16:21-24 (CEV) When a woman is about to
give birth, she is in great pain. But after it is all over, she forgets
the pain and is happy, because she has brought a child into the world.
[22] You are now very sad. But later I will see you, and you will be so
happy that no one will be able to change the way you feel. [23] When
that time comes, you won't have to ask me about anything. I tell you for
certain that the Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name.
[24] You have not asked for anything in this way before, but now you
must ask in my name. Then it will be given to you, so that you will be
completely happy.
In my name
The first occurrence of the phrase. See on
Matthew 28:19. Prayer is made in the name of Jesus, "if this name, Jesus
Christ, as the full substance of the saving faith and confession of him
who prays, is, in his consciousness, the element in which the prayerful
activity moves; so that thus that Name, embracing the whole revelation
of redemption, is that which specifically measures and defines the
disposition, feeling, object, and contents of prayer. The express use of
the name of Jesus therein is no specific token; the question is of the
spirit and mind of him who prays" (Meyer). Westcott cites Augustine to
the effect that the prayer in Christ’s name must be consistent with
Christ’s character, and that He fulfills it as Savior, and therefore
just so far as it conduces to salvation. VWS
Why we don’t "ASK"
Worry
Lack of Faith or Trust
Fear
John 14:1 (CEV) Jesus said to his disciples,
"Don't be worried! Have faith in God and have faith in me.
John 14:1 (NLT) "Don't be troubled. You trust
God, now trust in me.
John 14:1 (CEV) Jesus said to his disciples,
"Don't be worried! Have faith in God and have faith in me.
John 14:11 (CEV) Have faith in me when I say
that the Father is one with me and that I am one with the Father. Or
else have faith in me simply because of the things I do.
John 14:27 (CEV) I give you peace, the kind of
peace that only I can give. It isn't like the peace that this world can
give. So don't be worried or afraid.
Who is "the helper"
John 14:15-18 (CEV) [15] Jesus said to his
disciples: If you love me, you will do as I command. [16] Then I will
ask the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will help
you and always be with you. [17] The Spirit will show you what is true.
The people of this world cannot accept the Spirit, because they don't
see or know him. But you know the Spirit, who is with you and will keep
on living in you. [18] I won't leave you like orphans. I will come back
to you.
John 14:25-26 (CEV) [25] I have told you these
things while I am still with you. [26] But the Holy Spirit
will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take
my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of
what I said while I was with you.
Is there a catch condition, requirement or
stipulation to experiencing all that God has for us?
John 14:15 (CEV) Jesus said to his disciples:
If you love me, you will do as I command.
John 14:21 (CEV) If you love me, you will do
what I have said, and my Father will love you. I will also love you and
show you what I am like.
John 14:23 (CEV) Jesus replied: If anyone loves
me, they will obey me. Then my Father will love them, and we will come
to them and live in them.
John 14:31 (CEV) I obey my Father, so that
everyone in the world might know that I love him. It is time for us to
go now.
"ASK"
Am I showing my love for God by being
Obedient?
Am I relying on the Holy Spirit to help
me overcome worry, distrust of God and fear?
As part of exercising my faith-- what
am I asking God for?
What do you really want God to do in your life?
John 16:23-24 (CEV) When that time comes, you
won't have to ask me about anything. I tell you for certain that the
Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name. [24]
You have not asked for anything in this way before, but
now you must ask in my name. Then it will be given to you,
so that you will be completely happy.
