The Most Important Conversations You’ll Ever Have

      Do you love Jesus? Where you spend eternity?

      Death and your final arrangements

      Living without your spouse

      How do you talk about yourself to yourself?

 

      Do you love Jesus? Where you spend eternity?

Who or what are you really living for?

What is your consuming drive or passion?

What is the center of your life?

What is most important to you?

How does your checkbook, credit cards and spending patterns agree or disagree with your answers?

The "Romans Road"

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard.

Romans 5:8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 10:9-10 For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.

Romans 10:13 For "Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Begin making it a daily habit to share your joys, struggles, questions, disappointments about your spiritual life with your spouse– and pray for and with one another!

      Death and your final arrangements

Where are you going to be buried?

Do you have cemetery plots?

Do you have a will?

Who will take care of your minor children in the event of your death?

How will your spouse survive if you die?

      Living without your spouse

Where do you keep your check book and bank accounts; financial records-- credit cards, tax returns, bank statements, mutual funds, stocks, retirement savings; Insurance– life, car, medical and other policies; Home Deed and Mortgage; Debts; Cash?

3 Broad Categories

Where things are– paperwork etc.

What you own– list all the things of value

What you owe– list of all debts; who you owe; how much; terms

      How do you talk about yourself to yourself?

We project how we feel about ourselves to others!

Proverbs 23:7a (ASV) For as he thinketh within himself, so is he:

Luke 6:45 (NIV) The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

Romans 8:5 (NLT) Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.

Philippians 4:8 (NIV) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.

How do you talk to yourself about yourself?

Self Talk can be generated from:

Upbringing / Parents / Doubts Cliches / Satan / Negative Thoughts or Experiences / Guilt

Sometimes the most worn path in our brain is a negative one– the good news is that we can always choose a new one!

What is your governing relationship message? Which tape recording do you hear most often?

It’s completely within your control to turn down and turn off negative messages and begin hearing new, positive messages

A good exercise if you struggle with negative self-image or self doubt is to read Ephesians 1-3. Take note of who we are in Jesus.

Self Talk =

      You believe these messages no matter how irrational they are

      They are learned, often early in life– our family of origin gave us a lot of messages we’ve held on to throughout our life

      Every minute of every day you’re at a crossroads– will you choose the negative or the positive message to tell yourself and dwell on?

      77% of our self-talk tends to be negative

Because– Wherever you go– you are!

      When you remember your partner’s personal FEAR FACTOR and respect his or her safety need... you’re speaking love talk

      When you intentionally respect and honor the hardwiring of your partner’s talk style... you’re speaking love talk

      When you put yourself in your partners shoes, with plenty of empathy... you’re speaking love talk

      When you keep your gender differences in mind and listen with the "third ear"... you’re speaking love talk

      When you do any and all of these... you’re speaking love talk

1 Cor. 13:1 What if I could speak all languages of humans and of angels? If I did not love others, I would be nothing more than a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
